Interview: John Kennedy
This year is the 20th anniversary of one of the country’s best loved radio stations, Xfm. John Kennedy, who has been with the station right from its inception, has been hosting the longest running of all the specialist music shows during that time, four nights a week. X-Posure focuses on cutting edge and alternative music, from genres across the board, and was the first to give airplay to demos of The xx, Adele and Mumford & Sons amongst others.
With the vocal tone of a young Bob Harris and the record collection even John Peel himself would have been proud of, Kennedy is the presenter who lets the music be the ‘star’, unlike many other DJs whose egos are bigger than any artist they will ever spin a disc by. Champion of breaking unheard of artists – and who was recently one of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize judges – Hooting & Howling finds out a little more about the man behind the mic.
