Jade Hopcroft Folk/Pop Debut

Mad Love For Cheval Sombre

Christopher Porpora is a singer/songwriter/poet from New York. Better known as Cheval Sombre, his new album 'Mad Love' drops today (October 29) and a thing of rare beauty it is too - and that's not referring to just the limited-edition heavyweight crystal clear vinyl (with download card) that it comes as (as well as a digital download).

Co-produced by Sonic Boom and featuring guest appearances by Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna), Britta Phillips (Luna, The Belltower), Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser of MGMT, and Sonic Boom himself, 'Mad Love' is an apt title for what can be assured many listeners will feel for it upon hearing.

It comes wrapped in Sharon Lock's beautiful and mysterious artwork which was inspired by the letters of Emma Hauck, a schizophrenic whose series of heartbreaking missives to her husband were found at a German asylum following her death. Each had the same phrase repeated time and again: “Sweetheart come”. With all of this attention to detail, 'Mad Love' has truly been made with love.

Love, pain and the whole damn thing twisted with folkesque melancholia, 'Mad Love' is a work for lonely late night bedroom listening, while dissecting all those relationship woes.

Cheval Sombre is quite possibly the new Leonard Cohen.

To follow the album release he will play a one-off live show at St Pancras Old Church in London on November 22, accompanied by Sonic Boom.

Torches Set A Fire With Second Single Release

London based noir-pop five piece Torches are set to release 'Someone Needs A Ritual' backed with 'Wolves'. The single, released on November 5 on 7" and digital download, is the follow-up to their debut 'Sky Blue & Ivory' and the third release on new label Heart Throb Records.

Taking a lead from 'Sky Blue & Ivory's dark anthemry, 'Someone Needs A Ritual', Charlie Drinkwater's vocals once again take centre-stage with his nostalgically harked chorus lines, as the track's swing weaves through etched guitar lines, rampant synth stabs and pulsating electronic drum patterns.

Already championed by the likes of Huw Stephens on Radio One - who booked the band for a slot on his Swn Festival stage - Torches' invigorating take on the twisted hue of pop's outer edges is quickly finding them a besotted throng of hearts and minds.

Torches are Charlie Drinkwater (vocals), Nic Smith (keyboards), Alex Sprogis (samples), Steph Anderson (guitar)and Ed Kellend (drums).

Listen below to 'Someone Needs A Ritual' and then catch the band live on November 2 for the single launch at the Old Queens Head in London. The event, where they are supported by Chateaux and Loom, is free entrry before 8pm.

New Single From Eugene Francis Jnr

The multi-talented Eugene Francis Jnr has announced the release of a new single ‘Calliope Fuxwar', taken from the forthcoming album ‘Death And Das Love Bytes’.

The enigmatic troubadour has found himself beating many a path in the creation of his new album. From supporting the likes of Coldplay, Tegan & Sara and Todd Rundgren, to selling everything he owned and riding out on a motorcycle into Latin America, then hiding out in a studio in Los Angeles to put down a menagerie of ideas and life experiences on record that make up ‘Death And Das Love Bytes’.

The new single ‘Calliope Fuxwar’ is perhaps the perfect introduction to the direction Eugene Francis Jnr has taken in recording ‘Death And Das Love Bytes’, but it still only scratches the surface of a record bubbling over with ideas and rich in influences.

Here is Eugene’s take on how the new single came about:

“Calliope Fuxwar was really the product of reading endless Greek mythology on the road, listening to nothing but dubby complextro, French house and grunge for a week then getting my mittens on a new little drum machine and vocal sampler.

I wanted something musical but dirty, something to dance to but equally something to pogo to. I had also just watched Drive and was blown away by the synthy piano soundtrack.“

Recalling influences ranging from MSTRKRFT and Daft Punk to Sleigh Bells and Animal Collective, and spanning across avant-garde soundscapes to joyful folktronica, Eugene Francis Jnr playfully fuses together beats, loops and samples to create multi-layered and infectious pop songs.

The single ‘Calliope Fuxwar’ is out November 12 2012. The album ‘Death And Das Love Bytes’ will be out in early 2013.

Waves Of Fury Deliver Debut Album

If you came across their 'Businessman's Guide To Witchcraft' earlier this year, you will have some idea of where Waves Of Fury are coming from. Or there again, maybe not.

Either way ‘Thirst’ is the debut album from the Somerset based outfit; a 10 track debut long player that sees Carter Sharp (vocals), Bim Williams (horns), Fil Ward (guitars/vocals), James Macphee (drums) and Jamie Bird (pianos/vocals) take up the rhythm & blues blueprint and filter it through a 40+ year historical path that encompasses everything from Motown & Stax to The Stooges, Sex Pistols, Spiritualized & The Mary Chain.

Recorded at PJ Harvey’s Bristol studio, Waves Of Fury spent several weeks touring the southern states of America. That experience very much shapes the record as Carter Sharp explains: “We are based in Somerset, and having travelled a bit in Southern US, I think it's our closest equivalent to some of those places; a similar sense of darkness, reservation, secretiveness, closed communities. The songs are about types of behaviour and relationships that happen everywhere, but which maybe seem a bit more dangerous away from bright, noisy, crowded cities. I was interested in the idea that maybe it's easier to get away with things in dark, quiet and isolated corners”.

Given that lyrically the album is inspired by Gothic writers like Edgar Allen Poe and Saul Bellow, expect plenty of the 'dark'.

‘Thirst’ is out on October 29 through Alive Naturalsound.

Waves Of Fury will be launching the album at The Shacklewell Arms, London on November 20.

Seasfire Unveil New Single

Many will have first come across Seasfire via the enigmatic sounds of 'Falling' or 'Undone': lush, heartfelt vocals; memorable electro-pop vibes. These were enough to set the word around that the Bristolian quartet were one of those bands who were 'ones to watch'. Now the band further that by unveiling an audio to the title track from their December 3 EP, 'We Will Wake' (released thru Cheap Thrills Records).

If you haven't been 'watching' now's the time to do so. 2013 looks like being a big year for Seasfire.

Chapel Club - The Remix

Last month Chapel Club announced a project whereby any member of the public could take the stems of their previously unreleased track 'Good Together', remix it and then digitally sell the track as they wished via any online outlet, keeping all profits.

Chapel Club: "We thought 'Good Together' made the most suitable candidate for a remix project because it’s ten minutes long and has lots of parts to play with – and also because the extended end section began life as a kind of live remix of our own."

For more information on the project - and to get involved - see the band's website: http://www.chapelclub.com/

In the meantime, you can hear the first remix below.

One To Watch :: On An On

On An On will release their debut album Give In on January 29 2013 via Roll Call Records. The culmination of a long and precarious, but ultimately rewarding journey, Give In was recorded with producer Dave Newfeld, known for his work on Broken Social Scene's seminal album You Forgot It In People as well as records from Super Furry Animals and Los Campesinos. To announce the news, On An On have released the music video for their lead single "Ghosts".

The Chicago and Minneapolis based trio (Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci, and Ryne Estwing) had played music with one another in various capacities for the better part of a decade. Most recently, they had shared the stage and studio as three fifths of the indie-pop outfit Scattered Trees.

According to Eiesland, the sessions were something of an exorcism: "We really wanted to get away from the sterility of our previous approach to recording." They embraced musical risks that in the past it might have shied away from. In the studio, the band members explored a natural chemistry and honed their sound; synthesizers, scattershot electro beats and ambient ear candy gave guitars, bass and drums a ghostly sheen.

After smashing everything they knew to pieces, they pulled themselves together around Give In, On An On's ten-track debut album - a dream-washed textural journey armed with a biting perspective on life, love, and the commonality of loss.

Watch out for their second single dropping in next weeks. Posting on their Facebook page, they cryptically state, along with picture below, "We have brand new tracks & videos in the works. Here's a quick pic preview of what's to come...."

Interesting.

Merz Finding A Direction Home

Produced in partnership with Matthew Herbert, in the foothills of the Swiss Alps, Merz’s new album No Compass Will Find Home is released on Accidental Records on January 7 2013. Described by the man himself as “A big bowl of Romanticism and a rush of Rousseau-esque rhythms”, the album features notable musicians Gyda Valtysdóttir (founding member of Icelandic band Múm), London guitarist & composer Leo Abrahams and Swiss drummer Julian Sartorius

Musically the album appears to hark back to the adventurism of Merz's eponymous debut in 1999, and while his last album Moi et Mon Camion (2008) was an homage to his English roots, this latest long player is harder to pin-down. Recorded in Switzerland, No Compass Will Find Home is a progressive, wild and ragged record with a unique kind of psychedelia.

Since the release of 2008’s Moi et Mon Camion , Merz has been touring UK, Europe and the USA, including festivals appearances at Green Man in UK, Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland and SXSW in Texas. While on the road touring Merz re-located to Bern, Switzerland where he began work on his new album.

This isn’t the first return for Merz aka UK musician Conrad Lambert. After huge hype and a major label release in 1999, Merz walked away from the deal and disappeared completely. Returning from self imposed exile in 2005, he released critically lauded album Loveheart on indie label Gronland and then scaled the iTunes charts in the US with follow-up album Moi et Mon Camion. Solidifying his reputation as a peerless contemporary balladeer, with heartfelt tunes, intricate production and enigmatic displays of multi-instrumental talent.

TOY & Charlie Boyer & The Voyeurs Hit The Road

TOY and fellow Heavenly Recordings label mates Charlie Boyer & The Voyeurs hit the road this week with dates around the country.

TOY, those psychedelic Krautrockers of the lush hair moves and even more lush guitars, embark on this UK headline outing which takes in their biggest show to date at London's Heaven on October 24.

First Listen :: Omega Male

Taken from the forthcoming self-titled album 'Omega Male' (via Full Time Hobby Records) out on November 12 2012, this is the debut from the all-male duo of Brighton's David Best (of Miyagi & Fujiya) and Brooklyn's Sammy Rubin (of laptop rock duo Project Jenny Project Jan).

Glitchy electro beats, a disco tangent that melds catchy hooks and humourously apt lyrics of the male condition and 'deadly misdemeanours'. Add some funk and scratchy laptop production work and you've got a sexy beast of a track.

Neil Halstead - A Name To Be Tied To

Neil Halstead may not be a name that is yet universally known, but if the word that has already started to spread around is to be believed, it will be.

Releasing 'Tied To You', the first single to be taken from the former Slowdive and Mojave 3 man's acclaimed new solo album 'Palindrome Hunches' (released two weeks prior to the single), on November 19, it's one of those rare pleasures that with its lost love refrain that just aches to be heard.

The single is backed with a remix by electronica artist and producer Mark Van Hoen. The accompanying video - to be seen below - to the remix gives the song an even darker and more unsettling twist.

To follow his acclaimed show last month in ondon at Bush Hall, Neil has added a London date to his UK tour in November. He now plays at The Windmill in Brixton on November 21.

First Listen: the I.D

Four-piece north London outfit the I.D are set to release their debut double A-side single "Bloodsweat And Honour" / "Own Designed Love" on October 29 2012.

There's a distinct retro feel here, not surprising given the band's musical influences lay in the sounds of the late 70′s and early 80’s. Coupled with an appreciation of the ideals of Dadaists, the I.D deliver their own slant on the post-punk manifesto.

After having released the free download "Age Anti Age" earlier this year, "Bloodsweat And Honour"/ "Own Designed Love" are two tracks which showcase an intense unity. Coloured with a melancholic undertone, the intricate lyrics, the angular guitars and the unique voice bring the listener a great deal of energy. Think Gang Of Four and The Cure with a twist of modern day finesse and find yourself tapping thumbs and feet along to the I.D.

Take a listen to "Bloodsweat And Honour" here:

To accompany the release of the single, the band will be playing several live dates in London at:

Interview: The Ramona Flowers

When the Bristolian five-piece The Ramona Flowers unveiled the first track from their forthcoming debut EP a few weeks ago, little was to be found about them bar a support tour slot with Mancunian trip-hoppers Lamb. Even inquiries to their label result only in the barest of perfunctory details. With Dismantle and Rebuild picking up favourable airplay and a quiet buzz building around their big chorus lines and glitchy electro-pop hypnotic tones, it would seem that this is one band who look set not to be kept off the public radar for much longer.

We talk to Steve (vocals) and Sam (bass) for their debut interview on the flowering of the Scott Pilgrim namesake.

One To Watch :: Lois & The Love

She's crazy and she's kooky and judging by 'Rabbit Hole', one side of the Lois & The Love forthcoming single release, absolutely loopy. Lois Winstone - "a cockney sparrow with the heart of an eagle" - drops vocal howls that sound like a pack of dogs have been let loose - yet it has a raw power that is set in an astonishing soundscape that reflects the depth and variety of Lois & The Love's influences. The new tracks are entirely produced and mixed by the band, meaning they are a true expression of what the band are about.

Offspring of famous parentage often face a difficult time to establish themselves in their own right, but Ms Winstone, the daughter of hard man actor Ray, seems to be bucking the trend. Actress, model and formerly of hip hop vibers Crack Village, she is part siren, part rock babe; her smoky blues delivery on 'Dark Serenade' bringing Janis Joplin immediately to mind.

Lois & The Love are:

Lois Winstone, vocals; Dean Sharpe, guitar, keys; Oli Longmore, bass; Ed Banda, drums.

'Rabbit Hole' / 'Dark Serenade' is released on November 19 on Normal Recordings.

One To Watch :: Bronze Medallists

Based in East London and formed just over a year ago, the quartet Bronze Medallists combine experimental electronica, art-pop with a pinch of shoe-gazery and thought-provoking lyrics to create an exciting and addictive new sound. Mixing indie guitar and drums, and vocal harmonies with raw synths and strings, comparisons have been made to the likes of Postal Service, The National and Broken Bells.

Following the release of their debut single ‘Mathematics’ (Tape Club Records), and completing a major UK support tour, they are now releasing their EP ‘Empire’ with a launch on October 29 at the Old Blue Last, Hoxton, with support from Emperor Yes and Dufflefolks.

Already championed by radio DJs such as Ally McCrae (BBC R1), John Kennedy (XFM), Bethan Elfyn (6 Music), and Jim Gellatly (Forth FM, Clyde FM), this summer they played at Green Man Festival and will be touring with Francobollo in November.

Bronze Medallists' new E.P ‘Empire’ is designed to be listened to in order, start to finish. An old fashioned idea in a world where shuffle is dominant. An exercise in order and chaos, layers of live instruments and programmed samples, with backing vocals from Nena Zinovieff, daughter of legendary synth designer Peter Zinovieff, are channeled into four ambitious songs that document insomnia, love, honesty, mortality and the metropolis.

If opener ‘Empire’ whets the aural appetite, then ‘Norwegian Wood' - inspired by Haruki Murukami’s book of the same name - with its electro loops that morph into a live string arrangement, will leave you unprepared for ‘Policy': recorded completely live, mashing dirgey synths with acoustic instruments, it strikes a chord of change that stands apart so strikingly you could be forgiven for thinking you had just dropped into another band entirely.

Drawing the E.P to a shuddering halt, ‘EH1’ is a two-minute apocalyptic pop song about death. The name was a working title that the band grew fond of. It is the postcode in Edinburgh (singer Oliver’s home town) where a New York-style street grid, emerges from the higgledy charm of the medieval part of the city. Thematically it is a homage to The Flaming Lips' ‘Do You Realise’, the wake up call that only mortality can inspire.

This is not just any old electronica-infused band. Bronze Medallists may be the name, but gold is where they're headed.

Bronze Medallists are: Oliver Price - guitar, synths, lead vocals; Oliver Sheppard - low synths; Ben Ferrari - bass, piano, synths; Luke Roberts - drums.

One To Watch :: The Alice Kona Band

The Alice Kona Band unveil a new track today via Bandcamp.

The four-piece garage punk rockers from Belfast have unleashed 'Film' as a free download. Raunchier than previous single 'Bad Dreams', 'Film' is an earblast of fast and ferocious crashing guitars and a raw punk vocal delivery that still manages to linger in the senses with its catchy powerful beat.

The Alice Kona Band have started to make a name for themselves outside of Irish shores; 'Film' could just be what they need to take it to the next level.
