Continuing the seeming rise of Manchester based acts including The 1975, WU-LYF and the much anticipated return of synth-poppers Hurts, we have RISE. With The Verve and The Longcut cited as influences, the Mancunian quartet are relativity new on the scene having only formed this year; they are said to have imprisoned themselves in the studio with techno outfit N-Trance in order to hone their sound and are set to unleash debut single ‘Purple Heart’ on the masses at the tail end of April. However, if they 'look' in any way familiar or the names start ringing bells with you it may be due to their having previously been known as No Tokyo and received a fair amount of notice on the live circuit.
Describing their sound as ‘space dance rock’, there are certainly hints of the mid-90’s influences that the band have moulded their sound around. A driving drum section blended with a very Ash-esque guitar line (think Shining Light) lends itself perfectly to frontman Daz Whittaker’s Ashcroft heavy vocals. Light flurries of reverb/delay laden strings add another dimension to the band’s sound which is more than welcome and breaks up the rhythm sections droning hypnosis.
The band’s online footprint is fairly scarce due to their infancy however early artwork samples are beginning to surface and are very much in keeping with the steady ‘rise’ of electro guitar bands. I hope that RISE can find space amongst their peers in the coming months leading up to the festival season where they are sure to come into their own.
RISE are yet to release any plans in the way of live dates but you can be sure to see them at a venue near you this summer.
‘Purple Heart’ is due to be released on digital platforms and will be available to download from all major online sites from April 29.
