One To Watch :: Conner Youngblood
You might be forgiven for thinking after hearing the opening chords to Dallas singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Conner Youngblood's 'Vegas', that it is going to open up into some real US rock number in a Springsteen sort of way. It doesn't. And given Youngblood favours the likes of Bon Iver and Elliott Smith, you wouldn't expect it to either.
And if ever there was a 'sleeper' release then this is it. Released in March of this year, after quietly picking up a few positive blog reviews, in the UK at least, little more was heard. Then, after nearly three months - plus live dates with Kodaline and an appearance at SXSW, as well as playing the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware in the interim - it suddenly starts picking up airplay; Xfm, being one. Yale graduate (he majored in American Studies)Youngblood himself (he plays guitar, piano, banjo, drums, accordion, harp) is as mystified as the rest of us, though naturally happy that his talent seems at last to be recognised. And if UK promoters have any sense, they'll be firing off emails to get this guy over this side of the pond.
