Bank Holiday Hot Special - August 23 2013
With a long Bank Holiday ahead, time to chill out with a few drinks and the headphones on. So, with that in mind, we offer you a bumper ten sounds that are currently doing the biz for us, to travel through your ears and around your head over the weekend.
PANDA CUBS - RISE
Stunning use of visuals - plus a few well-placed handclaps - bring this contemporary dark pop, 80s-infused single to life.
FRIDAY CLUB - CUT ME UP
One of the on-the-rise, next flow Birmingham bands. This is their best yet - and guaranteed to be more radio-friendly than their previous 'All I Wanna Do Is Fuck'.
CURB - HOW ARE YOU NOW?
Another new Birmingham band who, judging by this first online release, look to have great potential. We recently interviewed them after their debut gig here and this is one we expect to be hearing much more of.
THE KALEIDOSCOPES - SUMMER DAZE
Things come in threes - and so do Brum bands it seems. Riding a more psych/shoegaze train, this four-piece throw in some dark noise-pop on top.
RxGIBBS - CONTACT
Title track from Michigan producer Ron Gibbs' debut album released recently thru Cascine and Bella Union.
HOCKEYSMITH - NOW I WANT TO
Sisters Annie and Georgie released debut single 'Let's Bang' in July. This track, 'Now I Want To' is the ethereal B-side which just oozes out all over.
FICKLE FRIENDS - I WANT/YOU WANT
Brighton five-piece indie pop outfit. 'I Want/You Want' follows their May debut EP release, 'Girl Like That'.
YOUTHBLOOD - 100 BPM
Psych/shoegaze trio also hang in the Brighton(/Maidstone) reaches. Known as Trophys at their late 2011 inception, had a change of mind last year and opted for the new moniker. Going by this latest offering, it seems to have fired up their own.blood.
HOT MODELS - SWIM AWAY
New demo release from four-piece that covers surf pop crossed with Parquet Courts in a Huddersfield/Scunthorpe kind of style - and it sounds good, too.
MOSCOW - DOWN (HELL FIRE)
Fierce and heavy garage punk by way of Stoke. Title track from their newly released EP.
