London-based quartet Young*Husband have been generating a fair buzz about them during the past year or so surrounding the release of their debut album ‘Dromes’. BBC 6 music, NME, Q Magazine and XFM have been all over them like a rash and in turn pushing Young*Husband into the ‘ones to watch’ in dozens of publications and the general hype machine.
With an eclectic range of influences including The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Y La Tengo, this psych pop outfit seem to be on the road to somewhere with the backing of super cool indie label (Sonic Cathedral) and an album produced by Nicolas Vernhes, (Wild Nothing, Deerhunter) let’s hope the tunes match the hype.
The first track to be taken off ‘Dromes’ is the three-minute, 70’s throwback ‘Silver Sisters’. As far as production and sonic landscape is concerned, the track is spot on. The opening notes of the Wurlitzer, blended with some tremolo riddled guitar lines and the acoustic guitar from ‘Horse With no Name’ speeded up, all is well and pleasant for all of 35 seconds - and then the track goes quite literally nowhere for the remaining two minutes 30.
‘Silver Sisters is a track stuck somewhere in the middle. The vocal performance doesn’t seem to quite match the instrumentation or the general vibe of the track. Young*Husband have clearly tried extremely hard to give the impression that they haven’t tried at all to produce a wishy-washy Beach Boys tribute but unfortunately in this instance it hasn’t worked wonders.
