For the last date on their current 'Let It Break' tour, fast-rising new guitar band Pusher make a return to Leicester's Soundhouse. As those who have followed this young five-piece Barnsley outfit since they formed last summer will know, it's almost a given that they never disappoint on a live outing . And they don't.
They couldn't have chosen a better set opener than the gloriously dark and gritty new single 'Let It Break'. Break out it does, as its raw and hypnotic rhythm washes over the row of Pusher fans glued to the mesmeric vocal delivery by frontman Gilroy, and receives instant enthusiastic approval.
The glorious wall of sound Pusher create during their six-song set, which includes the two tracks the band released digitally at the end of last year, the psych-sonic 'Cold Is Just the Dark' and the soaring 'Shoot Life' with its infectious rhythm and psychedelic wrapped riffs. Gilroy’s vocals here, are stronger, darker and more haunting than ever. Joy Division? Ian Curtis? You wouldn't be far off.
As they run through 'Reign' and 'I Have Loved' they exude genuine talent - and a professionalism beyond their years. Each song is strongly crafted and filled with heavy basslines and drum beat (courtesy of Hemingway and Scraff, respectively. Couldn't make those names up could you? Er, well...) that ably complement the vocal delivery.
Although playing to a crowd not huge in number, those that were here tonight were enthusive enough throughout to make up for those that missed out on a band who more than live up to the "brilliant new band" accolade bestowed on them by fellow Yorkshiremen Exit Calm.
The band is now taking some time off to head into the studio. But mark my words, you'll be hearing much more from these guys in the coming weeks and months ahead. Pusher are a band taking it to another level.
Set List:
Let It Break
One Day
Reign
I Have Loved
Cold Is Just the Dark
Shoot Life
