First Listen :: Wilderness Hymnal
This is a curious one. Not only are you are unlikely to hear anything similar to the self-descriptive "experimental piano doom" work of Wilderness Hymnal currently, but having a three-track EP cover almost 19 minutes in length - which is near enough double the average - you can't say the Manchester artist is not giving value for money.
Just released digitally via Bandcamp, it is hard to describe the 'Transmutation' EP other than to say it sounds part church - hymn-like, even - and part like a spliff splurging meditative accompaniment to an other-worldly realm. Yet each track, and particularly 'Arc', are, it has to be said, strangely compelling.
Although his work is not the kind of thing you are going to be kicking up your heels to, but for a state of grace-like calm, one-man sound guru GHR Leeming who provides not just the evocative vocals, but combines organic with the electronic via piano, organ, synths, samples, slide guitar and additional percussion, has cornered the market.
Catch him on August 27 at Night & Day Café, Manchester to see how it all works and sounds live.
