Listen Up :: New From Australia #7
The latest of the best from Down Under.
THE MCQUEENS
According Melbourne’s The McQueens the name came about through vocalist Noah Harris finding out about actor Steve McQueen and thinking he was "pretty cool," they decided to call themselves after him. They deliver a brand of electro-infused rock that is dark, danceable, and synth-full, and now follow-up their first two EPs - 'Fitzroy' (2012) and 'Return To Laughter' (2013) - with a new single, ‘Friends’.
ELSTOW
Sydney five-piece Elstow (who take their name from the apartment building they were living in) was born out of an appreciation for the melodic folk stylings of Sixties heroes Simon & Garfunkel and The Mamas & The Papas. Initially a duo, Jared Shaw and Chel Browne expanded last year to five members. Their debut five-track EP is out on September 15. Dreamy psychedelic landscapes fused with a unique folk sensibility, inspired by the American West Coast sound.
THE HUNTED CROWS
The Hunted Crows - Jacob Linnett - vocals / drums and Luy Amiel - guitar / backing vocals - are just about to release their debut EP on September 21. The Melbourne duo formed in March 2014, although they had first started playing together in a couple of bands last year. Influenced by thd likes of Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Violent Soho - and Drenge. Certainly there are strong shades of the latter (and Royal Blood) in their sound - loud - and being just a two-man affair. 'Sniff You Out' is their debut single, and it's likely many will be doing just that when the pair bring their sonic assault over to the UK next year.
REAL SLOW
Dylan Marks, also known by his stage name Real Slow, is an Australian electronic instrumentalist, producer and DJ from Port Macquarie, New South Wales. Newly emerged this year, he is prolific - three tracks uploaded online in the last month alone - and adept in creating chillwave constructions that hover in sonic low-key ambience.
OUR MAN IN BERLIN
Lo-fi, dreamwave glitchiness rules on this new release from Perth five-piece Our Man In Berlin. 'Cirrhosis' is the third single from their debut EP, 'is
it right?', which came out earlier this year. There's a cool groove going on here that could place them in a Glass Animals/Foals-but-with-Oz-accents category. Understated dance beats, striking guitars and the smooth vocals of Haydn Mansell keep it sliding along with ease.
LANKS
Lanks is the solo electronic side project of Melbourne musician, Will Cuming, frontman of seven-piece band Farrow, with the emphasis on multi-textured melodies. His debut EP 'Thousand Piece Puzzle'- where he manages to handle guitar, flute, synths, programming and a Bon Iver-like vocal - released in June, is a collection big soundscapes with electronic beats and yearning vocals. New track ‘Brave Man’- out on October 3 - is a mixture of tripping synths, intricate fluctuating guitar riffs, glitchy beats, and with swooning vocals that deliver adroit lyrics.
