Track Review :: CryBabyCry - Go Go
Rating: 7/10
Words: James Bishop
CryBabyCry...hmm, I'm not sure if this is a nod to their peers, or just a catchy band name, but they are a three-piece band from Wakefield, made up of Jonny Firth (a.k.a Jonny the Firth, Wakefield's one-man band), ex-White Parade drummer Nici Todd, and singer/songwriter Rosie Doonan. According to the press release all of whom started off on different musical journeys, but whose paths have joined along the way to form CryBabyCry.
So, all well and good so far. They are what I would call a working-class band, and don't get me wrong, that is not said with any disrespect in anyway: just what you see is what you get. 'Go Go' is the lead but from their debut EP, and while I'm a great believer in first impressions being crucial, with this it was, unfortunately, forgettable. It's a well-written song right enough, and the arrangement and production are fine, but I think my issue is more with how it is delivered.
'Go Go', purportedly, is a song of lust and passion - a relationship that's so wrong, it's right - but as soon as Rosie and Jonny start singing, there appears little conceivable passion, and it is hard to be convinced when they seem to be merely going through the motions. This singing partnership can work, but they need to start believing in what they do, in order that this transfers to the listener. In saying that, I'm reviewing a track is always a subjective experience, so take the time to make up your own mind as well. There have been around 40,000 Soundcloud plays of 'Go Go' so far to date, so I may be alone in the merits of this one. If you're in London on September 30 check CryBabyCry out live at The Social and decide for yourself.
