Listen Up :: New From Australia #9
Another crop of Australian artists that we're groovin on right now.
LEURE
Distinctly moreish, mesmeric vocals of Leure, the front name of Australian artist Ash Hendriks, known for her role as part of Perth-based alt folk duo Wolves At The Door. In this new project, she breaks away to venture into electronic beats. 'Unwind' is the new single taken pfrom the July released 'Lightfields' EP. Ambiently textured in a minimalist soundscape, darkly drifting beats, it isn't difficult to see how she has beeen compared to Grimes, Bat For Lashes, Lykke Li and Marina Topley Bird.
LEFT.
Sydney's latest electronic duo Left.
made their entrance last summer when they simultaneously released three tracks - 'Poison Vine', 'Slow Knife', 'My Love, Sleep Well' - which served to show off their fusion of electro pop with hip hop. Following the release of 'Nessun Dorma' last winter, the duo, Sarah Corry and Jono Graham, have just brought out 'When My Body Sleeps', the lead single from their forthcoming (but release date unscheduled) debut LP 'Sirens', that wallows in swathes of modulating synths and electronic percussion, with Sarah's airy vocals casting a chilled sonic shimmer.
AND
Might be easy to dismiss this in the first 60 seconds as just yet another in the post-80s electro-disco'd-vibed influx, but stick with it as the vocals of Dave Rennick, ex- of synth pop outfit Dappled Cities, takes it up a notch and it really does get to you - or at least, will have you bouncing in your seat on its punchy beat. 'U Know Me' is the debut single from Sydney-sider Rennick and the newly formed AND which was released last month. AND comprises of Rennick and fellow
Dappled Cities members Ned Cooke and Alan Kumpulainen. And AND - and we are totally guessing here - are the letters from each of their names.
DAYZED
Formed this year in Geelong, three-piece outfit Dayzed - Josh Prendergast, vocals/guitar; Max Malone, guitar; Adrian De Vries, bass - have just dropped their self-titled, four-track debut EP via Bandcamp. As their name may suggest, the sound is hazy, shimmery with an added dash of reverb.
SONS OF RICO
'In My Eyes' is the latest track (released last month) from the Melbourne rock four-piece, originally from Perth where they originally formed in 2004 under the name Bus #56. Releasing their debut album 'Reactions' in 2010, Sons of Rico have stomped their way through diversity - from pop-infused beginnings, to a dabbling in the dark arts of guitar rock piggery, to an ELO-inspired reprise, coming up to their 'In Rico Glaciers' full-length of last year.
HIGH-TAILS
Sydney four-piece with new single 'Terrible Day', taken from their debut EP 'Sipping Tea To Make Music To Sip Tea To', out on October 3 via Stop Start. It follows on from previous single 'Bending Over Backwards'. Frontman Nicholas Griffith says of the song: "I wrote it at my old house in Chippendale. The opening line 'Walk your Chihuahua in the garden bed across from my house' literally came from watching an old woman and her dog out my window. From there I basically indulged myself in excessive wordplay, which I hope others will find as amusingly cheesy as I do." High-Tails made their debuta year ago with 'Maps' - a sunburst shot of economical pop that channelled the boys' beloved favourites The Go-Betweens. The band followed it up in February with slinky rock stomper 'Bending Over Backwards'.
