Premiere :: UK Exclusive :: Sykes - Gold Dust EP
South London's Sykes make what is termed 'alternative pop'. Now that can mean a lot of things to different people, but in regards to the music emanating from this group it's an articulate blend of upbeat guitars with those kind of catchy pop rhythms that stick in your head for days, and all fronted by a female vocalist who lends a chilled air of softly uttered tones.
The three-piece now follow-up their 2013 self-released EP 'Out Of Your Hands', with 'Gold Dust'. Once again produced by Cam Blackwood (Florence + The Machine, London Grammar), the titular lead single, released back in July, with its carefree lyrics “We’ll travel the world and no one will know” offered escape and a honey-coated, synth textured ambience to a lazy summer vibe. Latest single 'Anybody Out There' with evocative guitar riffs and desolate vocals make for a winning combination, while 'Away She Goes' ripples with lustrous orchestral textures against some pointed lyrics. Finally track in the four-pack, 'I'd Do It Again', with its line of "I'm feeling on top of the world" probably should sum up the feeling in the Sykes camp, coming to the end of a successful year with a 'gold star' EP in the bank.
Sykes play an EP launch show at The Social, London on release day, October 20 (now sold out), followed by performing at Camden's Nightmare festival on November 1.
Sykes are: Julia - vocals / guitar; Kristian - lead guitar / bass; Will - drums.
