Joanna Gruesome Win Welsh Music Prize
Joanna Gruesome fought off competition from the likes of the Manic Street Preachers and Gruff Rhys to take the 2014 Welsh Music Prize.
The Cardiff-based five-piece received the award for their debut album, 'Weird Sister' at the ceremony at Sherman Cymru in Cardiff.
BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, who co-founded the prize with John Rostron, said: “The 12 shortlisted albums are fantastic. A big thanks to our judges who chose Joanna Gruesome’s Weird Sister as the winner. They’ve come a long way and continue to thrive, so a massive congratulations to all involved with Joanna Gruesome.”
Now in its fourth year, the Welsh Music Prize celebrates the best of the Welsh music industry and provides artists in Wales with a platform to showcase their music globally. From a shortlist of 12 albums, nine judges made up of industry experts then cast their deciding votes by secret ballot to decide on the winning album.
The other finalists this year were 9 Bach, Euros Childs, Gulp, Samoans, Slowly Rolling Camera, The Gentle Good, The People The Poet, Future Of The Left and Cate Le Bon.
