Track Of The Day :: The Beach - Thieves
Creating all kinds of excitement and aplomb, from Radio 1's Head of Music George Ergatoudis, tweeting on Twitter last month: "Heard new music from The Beach today. Strictly incredible. This is a MAJOR talent", to debuting on Zane Lowe’s show as the 'Next Hype', to being featured in Q magazine as their Track Of The Day, and compared elsewhere to Jeff Buckley - and that all just in the space of the last few weeks, with more undoubtedly in a similar vein to follow.
So what's the deal? Well, the main USP seems to be the 'mystery' factor, with 'nothing' (allegedly) being known about this young artist. All Q could impart that this unknown was a Clapham, south London dweller, 'Thieves' is his debut single - released on March 22 - and was picked up by chance after kicking a ball into his neighbour's back garden - who just happened to be a record producer.
Ah, the stuff of legends, eh? But as we say here on Little Indie, no one is ever THAT unknown. And nor is George Morgan, or The Beach as he is seemingly now known as. Take a listen to 'Thieves' above - the polished studio single version with him sounding not too unlike Tom Odell, then take a look below at the video session the young GM did in October 2013, performing the same song, albeit sounding a little more rough around the edges. Both the song and its writer/performer appear to have grown in between time, with Morgan's vocals having progressed to the yearning cadence that switches between raw and heartfelt, drawing the listener in on each note.
Catch him tonight (February 9) in Bristol at Colston Hall with Amber Run and Pixel Fix.
You can also hear his first track, 'You Say', from almost two years ago, here.
Great Song!
