Making his haunting and impressive debut this week with 'Ghosts', the Liverpool-based singer/songwriter Mike Nelson, otherwise known as RAINES, has already seen the track garner over 9,000 plays on Soundcloud, and he himself compared vocally to Chris Martin.
The melodically rich piano ballad opens with Nelson's quite entrancing falsetto tones accompanied by delicately minimal keys; gradually adding strings and drums, the track unfurls beautifully over four minutes to lyrics, “Hard to believe it’s said and done/I too believe it’s not dead and gone/I want to believe all is well."
Nelson has described the meaning behind 'Ghosts' as being a very personal one: "It's about my dreams and my nightmares. It's about having someone to fight the world with. It's about love and loss, but also the idea that these feelings don't stop just because a relationship does."
With an EP coming shortly, RAINES sounds like a name and voice we'll be hearing much more of.
