Listen :: American Wrestlers - Kelly
Words: Ed Francis
Gary McClure. the former Working For A Nuclear Free City guitarist and currently releasing solo work under the name American Wrestlers, has a self-titled album currently out via Fat Possum Records, and now he's put out a video for the single 'Kelly' to draw your deserving ears towards it.
With tracks that trade on strong hooks committed directly to tape, American Wrestlers are carving out a niche of their own in that lo-fi sweet spot that's scratchy to the ear and soothing to the soul. On 'Kelly', the chorus melody and fuzzy guitar line that propel it fizz out of verses which centre on a simple chord arrangement and a toe-tapping drum machine rhythm. That gear shift encapsulates everything that's addictive about McClure's output: while you always start out aware that you're listening to something that's been laid down rough and ready onto 8-track, by the end all that sticks in your head is the power of the songwriting. It's music that's put together with the most basic of resources, but which continually transcends those limitations to become more than the sum of it's parts.
Much the same can be said of the video for 'Kelly', which blends together an assortment of seemingly unconnected clips flickering away on an old TV set into an engaging accompaniment to the single.
