Newcomers Teddy Get Cuddly On Debut 'Happy Tim'
Words: Ed Francis
East London electro-pop newcomers Teddy follow up the announcement of a home-turf show at The Islington on May 28, with the upload yesterday of debut track 'Happy Tim'.
Now, while Teddy may be 'new' to some, we at Little Indie were aware of their early demo well over a year ago (now removed online); we did in fact advise keeping them on your radar, so those who did so will be thanking us now they are starting to pick up notice.
'Happy Tim' itself represents the formal culmination of years of collaboration between school friends Tom Falle and Eddy Balihache, who grew up together on an island off the coast of France and formed the band at the beginning of their post-undergraduate life with the inclusion of third member Alex Glover.
Tracked to a slinking, Eastern-flecked synth atop rippling, multi-dimensional production, the group skilfully exploit a vocal sync with sunny harmonies that merely accentuate the darkly satirical humour of the lyrics [The previously mentioned demo contained the lines "I'm rough, baby/I shit every day and I think about dying", which gives indication of where these guys are at with pulling out an arch turn of phrase] which tell the tale of an eponymous character that enjoys life in a bubble of ignorance away from the uncomfortable realities of the world outside his office window (themes which seem especially prescient given the firestorm created by the interventions of certain media personalities in the immigration debate this week).
As we said before, keep Teddy in your sights.
