Birmingham is noted for turning out bands like Peace, Swim Deep, Jaws and the like, all very much adhering to the sane formula. But the Table Scraps duo bring a different kind of offering to the table.
Scott Vincent Abbott and Poppy Twist have worked out their recipe for fuzz-drenched punk noise to the nth degree, and this full-blooded, fuzz-driven album assault comes in the wake of singles like the 90-seconds of energetic riffs that comprise 'Bug', the track which brought them to notice last year.
Although they work through 12 tracks in just 35 minutes, they rattle through melodies, raw and thrusting in the apt definitive of 'short, sharp shocks' of frenzied delivery. Opener and second single is the brutal killer ‘Electricity’ (“How do you think I’m gonna live my life in a prehistoric land/We gotta have it/Electricity”) that explodes fearsomely and sets the scene for the album as a whole.
The intense ‘Bad Feeling’ rides on fuzz-drenched punk snarls and amplified noise; Poppy's primal beats projecting from her stand up drum kit like claps of thunder, while the lyrical sneer on ‘(I’m Not) Interested In You’ (“I’ve got better things to do/than hear the news from Planet You”) kicks home on both lyrics and sound - leaving the oily riffs and leathers for ‘Motorcycle (Straight To Hell)' where intensity nestles alongside rock 'n' roll vibes (“Devil’s blood for gasoline/prettiest thing I ever seen”). 'Vampyre’s Bite' crosses a hint of garlic in dark chambers with what sounds not unlike a new version of Suzi Quatro let loose.
Something as invigorating as 'More Time For Strangers' will ensure that anyone who gives half-an-hour to this won't be a stranger to Table Scraps' future work.
