‘Beautiful Words’ is certainly an apt title for what can quite honestly be called a lyrical masterpiece, that Oscar Scheller has created in the form of an EP. Seven tracks, all of which are equally impressive considering they were formed in the Londoner's bedroom, containing the singles ‘Stay’, ‘Daffodil Days’ and single B-Side, ‘Caramel Brown’, along with three previously unheard songs: ‘Forget Me Not’, ‘Told You So’ and ‘Grow Up’.
Opening with stabbing synths, thunderous drums and of course Oscar's signature baritone vocal, 'Beautiful Words' evolves into wonderfully anthemic realms - not that he is likely to encounter any complaints on that score. A common occurrence throughout the EP is his ability to take a lo-fi indie pop song, and turn it into something that reaches the big level. 'Forget Me Not', although not a stand-out track on the EP, is neither inferior to the rest. Its whistling melody is guaranteed to stay firmly embedded in your head for a week at least, growing as it does with every hearing.
Lead single 'Daffodil Days' is a contender for my personal favourite; when it first came out I listened on repeat for four fifty-minute bus journeys to and from school – it definitely made them better. The auto-correct story behind this only adds to the incredible catchiness of it, creating - in my eyes - what must surely be the perfect pop song. ‘I just want to be young forever’, Scheller tells us in ‘Grow Up’, a song in itself that has a timeless quality to it that make well see it never growing stale. Lyrically, it's the best on the EP.
'Stay', as simple as it is, rounds off the EP brilliantly. Covering a variety of sounds whilst remaining true to his sound, Oscar has achieved here what many others have attempted, but failed to deliver in practice. He leaves us wanting more.
