Introducing :: Hellier
Words: Linn Branson
New Kiwi drone-gaze duo Hellier are just about to release their debut three-track 'Hellier1' EP on June 30, with lead single 'Oskar Says' already streaming online along with the video, above.
Originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, the pair - Teyler Hayes (formerly of Will Sgt. Survive?, Love You To, and currently involved in MOSES), guitar/vocal and Heather Holdaway, drums - formed in March this year, and recorded the EP in a Wellington shoe factory. Influenced by the sound of Nick Cave and the Jesus and Mary Chain, their guitar 'n' drums sound puts a new spin on a well-seasoned genre.
Although they have opted for 'Oskar Says' from the EP to give a taster of their wares, as it were, having heard 'Darling' one of the record's other two tracks (with 'Spooky Child'), we think that is actually better. More sludge and rhythm, and given a dark appeal by Hayes' Cave-ish vocal. But either way, Hellier are a band we would like to hear more from. And with a NZ tour and full-length release on the cards for later this year, it looks like we will be.
