Update: The 1975: Not Gone - Just Oiling The PR Machine? / Announce November UK Tour
Words: Alison Mack
With social media sites ablaze yesterday with the seeming demise of The 1975, or at least, their disappearance from Twitter and Facebook, less than twenty-four hours later back they come, with their online presence reactivated.
The band's Matthew Healy had taken to Twitter over last weekend, posting a cryptic comic strip alongside the enigmatic wording: "Our projected identity must change not only visually but philosophically - how do you do that?" that seemed to imply that The 1975 were either splitting, or at least going on one of those legendary 'breaks'. Later their social media profiles were deleted.
Now they return, and what's more, an image has appeared that reverses the cover of the group’s debut album, with a change from black to white in colour with an added touch of pink. The savvy and sceptical are now of a mind that thus has all been an elaborate burst of pre-publicity for a forthcoming record and to generate a little more talk about the band.
Healy had previously posted a photo on Instagram of an iTunes playlist entitled 'The 1975-2', later stating in an interview that their second album - the follow-up to 2013's self-titled debut - would be released in “2016, definitely, February to April.”
Latest word around, however, is that the image - see above - they have put out this morning (June 2) is to be the first of several, designed to be downloaded by fans to create their own archive for the band.
While many will no doubt be saying "Who cares?", for The 1975 themselves and their team, this has certainly brought them to the fore once again in what was otherwise a quiet period.
