Listen :: Big Scary - Organism
Words: Ellie Ward
It may be all of two years since they put out 'Not Art', but Melbourne duo Big Scary are finally back with a new single.
The stripped back 'Organism' is the lead single from songwriter/producer Tom Iansek's and Jo Syme's upcoming third album. In a press release, Iansek says the track is "moving back towards Jo and I as a band and the dynamic between us. It's refocusing on the duo. With this has come a lot of stripping back of the non-essential, using less to create more. Using new and unfamiliar textures but keeping the performance firmly grounded in that of two people playing."
For 'Organism', the pair broaden our their more usual minimalist piano/drums style, employing sax, bass and synths to fill out the drum line, while Iansek’s vocals take on a darker tone on the three-minute pop track.
Big Scary head out of Oz in September for a headlining North American tour, before playing several live dates in Europe and the UK at the end of the year.
