Words: Ellie Ward
Formed early last year, Los Angeles trio MUNA - Katie Gavin (vocals), Josette Maskin (lead guitar), and Naomi McPherson (rhythm guitar) - have, with their releases to date, carved out a name for blending brooding R&B, funk, and synthpop.
'Promise', their second single of the summer following 'The Grave, twists dark pop electric riffs and shining synths in a track that explores the feelings and emotions that arise with misconstruing passion as love:
"Mean-hearted girls will kill their loves to hurt themselves/They can't believe that they deserve anything else," sings Katie, with a deep hurt camouflaged by echoing harmonies and a clear-hearted sonic palette.
