Introducing :: Mayflower

Words: Linn Branson

The four-piece Mayflower are another new band out of the Manchester region - though guitarist Jake Calvert is at pains to point out that, while "we're Manchester-based, but we don't like to be labelled as a 'Manc band'. I'm from Stockport and other lads are from the Greater Manchester area."

Formed last year, their retro sound made up of shimmering guitars, infectious melodies and catchy hooks, has already seen them headline local venues such as the Night & Day Café, sold out The Castle Hotel and performed a live session track on the Introducing Show on BBC Radio Manchester.

'Sienna', below, is their third and latest track after 'The Dice Man' and 'Many Clouds', and was recorded at Elbow's Blueprint Studios in Salford. Seemingly not a reference to a certain actress - "in terms of what it's about, it's totally open to interpretation, although there's certainly no intentional link to famous people who might share the name!" - it saunters along a mellow, atmospheric path with some nicely interwoven guitar riffs and Oliver Gaydon's flowing vocals.

The band play their first London show at The Workshop, Shoreditch on November 7, followed by Ruby Lounge, Manchester on November 20, and Joshua Brooks, Manchester, December 1.

Mayflower are: Oliver Gaydon (vocals, guitar), Jacob Calvert (lead guitar), Mike Cromey (bass), Jim Mulherin (drums)
