New Sounds #17 26/11/15
SLUMBERJACK - ENIGMA (ft. GRRL PAL)
Perth production duo - Borneo-born multi-instrumentalist Morgan Then and Australian Fletcher Ehlers - follow their self-titled debut EP with this first taste from their upcoming sophomore record, joined here by fellow Australians GRRL PAL with Jay LeKat supplying the sugar rush vocals around a trap-slash-future background. Star rating: ****/5
AEROPLANE MODE - WILD EXCUSES
Released last week, the debut from classically trained New York duo, vocalist Jess Carvo and multi-instrumentalist/producer Alex Marko. Smooth pop ambience with a dash of sax appeal. Their website states: "Aeroplane Mode was born out of a need for personal escape and solace. It is a journey for direction, a search for the proverbial North on the musical compass, fueled by tragedy, loss and heartbreak." Star rating: ***/5
SEA PINKS - DEPTH OF FIELD
The Belfast three-piece (which includes Cruising's Neil Brogan) share a new track taken from their
forthcoming album 'Soft Days', set for release in January via CF Records. Rich in melodic guitar hooks and pulsing indie beats around a lush, dreamy chorus extolling the virtues of uncertainty. Star rating: ***.5/5
LEFT. - IOU
Latest single from the Sydney electronic duo, Sarah Corry and Jono Graham. Taken from their new EP 'Heart Shaped Vein', released on December 4, the track say the pair is "a statement against slut shaming, and the degradation so many women experience simply for being women. Power lives within us, and no one can take that away from us." Star rating: ****/5
DANCING YEARS - LEARN TO KISS
Taken from the Leeds-based five-piece's forthcoming debut EP due February 12 via Kolbalt/Hide & Seek Records. Six minutes of graceful, gradually building layering combined with mellow vocal harmonies from David Henshaw and anchored by an alluring array of drum beats in this latest single, produced by Colin Elliot (Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker). Star rating: ***/5
