Manchester's latest four-piece Cupids is the freshly laundered new name for Gramotones, a band that had built up a steady live fanbase over the last few years - including Paul Weller - until they underwent their metamorphosis this autumn.
The reason for the change? "Basically, we'd written in total about 50 tunes. Most of them really didn't suit the name we had - which we felt sounded like a 60s revivalist band," guitarist Jake Fletcher reveals. "So we decided to change our name as we just didn't think Gramotones represented who we were anymore."
Since adopting their cuter Cupids moniker the band have already released the fast and punchy mover, 'Money', a few months ago as their debut single, followed by two new tracks, 'Confession Box' and 'Heaven Knows Me Now' - see above - they have just unveiled, which both adopt a slower tempo of 60s-sounding instrumentation, melodic hooks that works in juxtaposition to Jake Fletcher's gravel-edged, raw vocals and the three-way harmonies with guitarist Sid Cooper and bassist Ryan Comac.
After a UK tour with Blossoms in October (which ended with a hometown sold out gig at The Ritz), they have also recently just sold out a headline show at the Deaf Institute, the Oldham/Bury-based outfit look like they are on course to stir up a fire in 2016.
Next plans? "To release an EP and tour consistently! says Jake. "We have tonnes more material and are also planning to go back into the studio in two weeks time to record even more stuff."
