With the emergence of Blossoms and young teen Rory Wynne, Stockport looks like becoming a centre of excellence for emerging new artists. Ranking high on acts to break in 2016 is third hot Stock act, No Hot Ashes.
In October last year, the indie-funk four-piece (with vocalist and bassist both just 18-years-old) recorded their debut single 'Goose' with platinum-selling producer Gavin Monaghan (Editors, The Twang, Ocean Colour Scene), which they independently put out, followed this last summer by AA-single 'Easy Peeler'/'Smooth'.
After building up a name in the North West over the last year - including appearances at Kendal Calling and Tramlines - they now end 2015 with the announcement of their signing to Playing With Sound - which guarantees we'll be hearing a lot more of them.
"We're looking to push to the next level, release another tune and gig as much as we can," lead guitarist Luigi Di Vuono tells us. "We have never had any serious backing, so having someone come to you and offer to put time, money and effort into your creativity means a lot to us."
As to how they derived their sound, like how their band name came to be, it was all down to inspired choices.
"We've always strived to find a unique sound and feel to our music," says Liu. "We didn’t really opt for it, it just came to us. We didn’t go rushing into finding a sound: we worked hard and let it come out naturally. It's a blend of all our music tastes. Our aim is to make people dance! As for the name, well that was pretty unplanned. We needed something, and then saw 'No Hot Ashes' on the side of a wheelie bin, and although none of us really love it, it has stuck now and people know it."
With plenty of resplendent guitar riffs, a solid bass line, and Taylor's dominant vocal, half-rapped presence, NHA display a punchy demeanor, interesting lyrics and their funk rhythms are all hard to dislike.
No Hot Ashes play Manchester's Night & Day Cafe on January 30 2016 for 'This Feeling Big In 2016'. Further dates for next year so far confirmed are:
February 12 Doncaster (venue TBC)
April 16 Manchester Castle Hotel
