New Sounds #30 9/2/16
ISABEL - FENCES
Brisbane neo-soul-folk/jazz-infused diva's latest single. Minimalist, smooth, hypnotic production with layered beats, this is the first song from her forthcoming EP, due later this year. Star rating: ***/5
SATCHMODE - DON'T GIVE UP ON ME
Dreampop duo (Gabe Donnay and Adam Boukis) from LA smooth shimmery synths over their darker lyrical channelling of "regret and pain about a broken relationship, and desperate denial" in this new track. Debut LP coming later this year. Star rating: ***/5
HERON OBLIVION - YOUR HOLLOWS
From the San Francisco band's March 4 arriving self-titled debut album on Sub Pop. Haunting six minutes of psych-folk that is helmed by the delicate, soaring vocals of folk chanteuse and HO drummer Meg Baird, building to a close of distortion. Star rating: ***.5/5
HIGHASAKITE - SOMEONE WHO'LL GET IT
Latest dark pop single released last month via Propeller Recordings from the Norwegian outfit, and taken from their second album due later this year. Ingrid Helene lends fervent vocal over insistent bass and drum sequences. Star rating: ***/5
SOME GIFTS - ALL WASHED UP
First single - out February 28 - from the Los Angeles three-piece's upcoming debut album 'Win Instantly', due next month. Hooky, energetic art-rock alternating between grunge-heavy verses and Vic Lazar’s yelped vocal delivery: “Waste not, want not/when the past is all you got." Lazar describes the song as “an homage to memories,” part inspired by a documentary he saw on Gary Glitter. Star rating: ****/5
