Johnny Lloyd ushers in a solo 2016 saying 'Hello Death'
Words: Linn Branson
We've always been a bit partial to young Mr Johnny Lloyd here, former frontman with one of London's finest bands, Tribes. And this particular writer still remembers with a grin our encounter at the Camden Barfly one night a few years ago when both of us were seeing yet another now defunct band, Sound of Guns...
But I digress, Johnny is now a solo operative, although when we featured him here back in December, he was part of a new band, SON - and indeed, has just recently supported The Maccabees and Mystery Jets on tour under such guise. But apparently that was JL and some musicians, not a band as such. Confused? So are we a bit.
But to the present and JL has been beavering away with no less than Jamie T, who has produced 'Hello Death', the first solo JL track to come from his debut EP ‘Dreamland' to be released on May 13 on Xtra Mile Recordings. Having started working with Jamie T, Lloyd then spent the summer producing tracks with Hugo White (The Maccabees) at the band’s studio in Elephant & Castle. Together they re-produced 'Happy Humans' and ‘Pilgrims' - demo versions of which have racked up over 200k streams already online, after Lloyd recorded them at home on his 8-track - and ‘Dreamland', which all feature on the new release.
“'Hello Death' is about saying goodbye,” says Lloyd. "I wrote it during a transition in my life. Saying goodbye to old faces and ways. It was the end of one time and the start of another.”
Watch the Tobias Ross-Southall-directed video for the thoughtful and deep 'Hello Death' here. Shades of Richard Ashcroft about it, we think?
