New Sounds #42 - April 4 2016
DARLING JAMES - THE ITCH
Falsetto vocals and heavy glitchy drums mark this follow-up to debut single 'Ultimatum Talk' by Melbourne's James O'Brien, former frontman of The Boat People. Recorded in his bedroom and mixed by John Castle (Megan Washington, Vance Joy). Debut EP coming soon. Star rating: ***/5
SOCIAL SKILLS - LET GO OF LETTING GO
North London-based three-piece collective whose nostalgic 70s sound combine atmospheric vocals in a retro mix of electronica. Follows debut single 'It's Invisible' released last year. Star rating: ***.5/5
CAVALRY - EVERYTHING
Released last Friday by the Liverpool outfit via Fierce Panda Records. A slow burner of rich melodies and mellow vibes, takes a while to get going, but worth the wait. Star rating: ***.5/5
IDLTRY - WEDNESDAY
From the self-titled debut EP, this lead track - "written on a rainy Wednesday" - is by Russian Moscow-based artist Leo Vasilets (whom we have previously featured under his other moniker, The Coat) and Natalia Mester in a smooth indie rnb feel. Star rating: ***.5/5
BEL ESPRIT - LEAVE ME HERE
Dirty riffs and dirty swaggering vocals from the Southampton-based alt-rock quartet. Catch live at 60 Million Postcards, Bournemouth on April 7. Star rating: ****/5
