New Sounds #47 April 20 2016
THE STRAWBERRIES - LABURNUM HOUSE
Band to watch, the Leeds rock'n'blues-roll five-piece released this new single on Monday. Gripping vocal swagger, driving guitars glaze a dark psych tinge. Star rating: ****/5
PHORIA - EVERYTHING BETA
In advance of debut album ‘Volition’ (out June 3 on X Novo Records), Trewin Howard's Brighton-based electro-pop quintet precede release with this hauntingly vocalled electronica cut. Star rating: ****/5
AUGUST - SWORD
Debut single (released last week) from indie-pop London duo Steve Hughes (vocals, guitars, production) and Ed Carlisle (drums, production). A chilled, dark piece that layers synths and vocals with a pulsating hypnotic chorus, described by the band as “a dark love song, a plea for desire no matter what the personal consequences.” Star rating: ***.5/5
THE SLUMDOGS - LOST AND FOUND
Debut single - out now via Hartfield Records - from the alt-rock Blackpool four-piece who are maybe not slumdog 'millionaires' yet, but generating a tasty morsel of piercing vocals, catchy melodies and guitar riffs here. Star rating: ***.5/5
HANDSOME GHOST - GRADUATE
New single - to follow debut EP 'Steps', and single 'Blood Stutter' of last year, and to precede album due later in 2016 - from Tim Noyes of impellent synth and bass indie synthpop with a retro feel. Star rating: ***.5/5
