Lemons, lemons - are Stone Roses squeezing out new material?
Words: Alison Mack
Lemons are appearing all over Manchester. What could this all mean? An ad campaign for a new drink? A new brand of clothing apparel, perhaps? Or the coming of new material from The Stone Roses?
The lemon, known as the band's favourite citrus fruit symbol and which appeared on the cover of their 1989 self-titled debut album - has been appearing across the city as rumours have been sent flying around of either a new single or album could be on its way.
With a festival appearance, four sold-out home gigs and a night at New York's Madison Square Garden all imminent, fans are certain that this is a sign a musical juice announcement will be flowing from The Stone Roses this week. The last time lemons were spotted in Manchester - other than in a greengrocers, of course - was when the band announced their show at the Etihad Stadium.
Frontman Ian Brown confirmed in March that the band were making "glorious" new music but refused to announce any release dates. And according to one fan who bumped into Mani over the weekend, he claims the bassist told him the band were releasing a "new single" this week, and to "keep listening to the radio".
Given that the band have only released two albums in 27 years - the aforementioned debut, and 'Second Coming', five years later - it's easy to understand why this has something of 'big news' stamped on it. But for now all we can do is sit and wait and watch out for lemons.
