New Sounds #51 May 2 2016
BIG THIEF - HUMANS
From their debut album 'Masterpiece' (out May 27 via Saddle Creek), the Brooklyn quartet share this third Alr-infue-garage-folk single which echoes Angel Olsen feel with Adrianne Lenker sailing forth lyrically on love and affection. Star rating: ***.5/5
BAD SOUNDS - AVALANCHE
Bath five-piece follow December's debut, 'I Feel', with another bite of deliciously catchy and funky upbeat pop in this latest single released last week via Killing Moon Records. Co-produced by Duncan Mills (Peace), they fuse bright pop hooks with fuzzy guitar lines. Catch live at The Great Escape, Brighton on May 20. Star rating: ****/5
LONTALIUS - KICK IN THE HEAD
19-year-old New Zealander Eddie Johnston released his debut album 'I’ll Forget 17' back in March, from which this lo-fi, big sentiment, delicately arranged track comes. Star rating: ***.5/5
CORBU- POLYGON FOREST
The New York-based electronic/psych outfit precede their self-produced August debut album 'Crayon Soul' with this first track from the record. Choral harmonies and tribal drumming over shimmering, glacial synths and hypnotic vocals. Star rating: ****.5/5
FALSE ADVERTISING - GIVE IT YOUR WORST
The Manchester-based trio fuel their penchant for sharp garage punk with this new fuzz-laden track - recorded in a garage - helmed by Jen Hingley's strong vocals and hooks a-plenty. Released in June on limited 7” via Too Pure Singles Club (b/w ‘Scars’). Catch live on May 5 at Leeds' Santiago Bar. Star rating: ***.5/5
