New Sounds #52 May 5 2016
STRANGE HEIGHTS - DIVE INTO FIRE
Chicago sextet create a melting-pot of multi-instrumental sound - guitar, synths, violin, vocal harmonies - on this sprawling rock-symphonic pop track from their self-titled, debut EP out on May 15. Star rating: ***/5
THYLA - MOTHERLODE
Third track of hypnotic guitar pop melded with reverb-drenched hooks and distorted bass, from the Brighton quartet fronted by vocalist/guitarist Millie Duthie, since they formed in the last half of 2015. Star rating: ***.5/5
COLOUR - FICTION
Lead track from the Stoke/Liverpool four-piece's new self-produced EP, ‘KAFÉ', out on June 28. Featuring their trademark glossy production quality, with a muted guitar and synth intro that leads into a dark, reverbed track that revolves around our culture’s current deluge of blatantly false advertising. Star rating: ***.5/5
LAZY LEGS - SPARKS
Chicago shoegazers (Laura Wagner - vocals/bass, Michael Tenzer - guitar/vocals, Nick Piontek - drums) present their first single of soporific dreampop from their debut album 'Visiondeath', set for June release on the Wild Patterns cassette label, run by Tenzer (also of Savage Sister). Star rating: ****/5
DECORATIONS - PROMISE
Following last year's 'Girls' debut EP, LA-based multi-instrumentalist Devon Geyer returns with this latest from his self-produced upcoming full-length, 'Have Fun', released June 10 via Frenchkiss Records. Indie rock with catchy hooks and exuberant melody. Star rating: ***.5/5
