New Sounds #56 May 18 2016
PLANE TICKET - POSTCARD FROM GLASGOW
From their forthcoming album 'Navigator', this Portuguese, Lisbon-based quartet blend a lush shoegaze element in with a touch of rock/psych-pop guitars and melodies. Very listenable - though not sure what Glasgow has to do with it. Star rating: 4/5
LITTLE BROTHER ELI - GOLD
Oxford’s answer to Alabama Shakes unveil this new track from their debut album ‘Cold Tales’, which drops on June 24. Melding country-infused blues garage rock with some impressive soulful vocals and guitar work, it's a hesd-nodder that picks up and goes for gold. Star rating: 3.5/5
TURNOVER - HUMMING
Gazey-emoers work up a dreamy shoegaze delight on this track from the Virginia Beach quartet’s second album 'Peripheral Vision' which came out last year. Gauzey guitars and soporific vocals. Star rating: 3.5/5
LAND LOVERS - SPRINGTIME FOR THE MYSTICS
Lead track from the Dublin alt-rockgaze quintet's new album 'The Rooks Have Returned', released last week on Popical Island. Fitting in a grand piano and a Mini Moog, a good tune ensues built around big beats. Catch live at Dublin's Workman’s Club on May 21 for an album launch show. Star rating: 3.5/5
5 DOLLAR SHAKES - AUXILIARY LOVE
Back to Ireland for the new single by these Co. Wexford indie rockers, taken from their recent EP, 'Come & See Enough To Stay'. Guitar led rhythms and festival stage anthemic choruses and strong vocals. Star rating: 3.5/5
