New Sounds #59 May 28 2016
COAST MODERN - GURU
The LA duo - Coleman Trapp and Luke Atlas - transport breezy synths and catchy Caribbean rhythms into a summer pop jam that was “inspired by dancehall and the Beach Boys to make a breezy Rom Com to accompany your emotional spring cleaning.” Star rating: 3.5/5
GREAT HARE - A SECOND CHANCE
After self-releasing a couple of singles and two EPs, Gothenburg DIY indie rock/dreampop quartet are gearing up for their triple this autumn. They precede it with this track of driving energy, effortless guitars and a smattering of experimental sound layering. Star rating: 3/5
CADENCE KID - HOLD ON ME
LA multi-instrumentalist (very multi) Cadence Kid, aka Jason Turbin, returns with latest single, an uplifting, warm and easy pop tune, released on June 3 via My Music Mind. Jason undertakes all of the instruments - bar drums - including violin, viola, erhu, flute, recorder, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, piano as well as vocals. Star rating: 3.5/5
FWAR - NOBODY
Leeds-based electronic producer (who also drums and performs vocal duties for Brolin live) released this electro-psych debut earlier this month. The track uses synthesised hypnotic bell lines, animalistic synths and primitive drums. “I wanted for the synthesisers to talk; to tell us how they feel despite their lack of worded-language which reflects the lyrical content." Star rating: 4/5
MADA CRAM - I'LL KEEP COMING BACK
Manchester-based alt-rock trio share their second track - after 'Do Not Obey' last month. Punchy beat and infectious melodies that soar on chorus. Catch live at Manchester's Night & Day Cafe on May 29 (free entry). Star rating: 3/5
