June 17 2016 - Hot Top Ten
TRACK OF THE WEEK
CERISE - TO GO AWAY
Oh, how we love Cerise Leang. This is the third time in a month we have featured her on these pages, firstly with 'St. Nick' followed by the title track of her debut album, 'Smoke Screen Dreams' (out on June 24), and now this latest. The LA/Chicago chanteuse has a softly seductive way of delivering her psych/grunge songs that just eats into your heart.
TEAM PICTURE - BIRTHDAY BLUES
You may well love or hate this drone-psych debut from the Leeds alt-rockers released this week, and at just shy of six minutes, it's probably best if it's the former. The track, the first in a series of single releases planned for 2016, serves up dueling, fuzz guitars, crashing drums and enough psychedelic noise to blow the roof off. Catch live tonight (June 17) at The Packhorse, Leeds.
WRSTLNG - MEDS
Gorgeous 90s inspired cool in this debut single - released last month - from the Gothenburg quartet we first heard last summer with the wonderfully titled 'No Shit, Sherlock'. Twanging riffs in pop melodies.
MNNQNS - CAPITAL TALK
The French, Rouen-based post-punks we featured here back in February, return with this new single of punk-meets-80s-New Wave released last week, and taken from their forthcoming 'CAPITAL' EP, out September 30.
PLASTIC MERMAIDS - PARIS MILKSHAKE
The Isle of Wight crew unveil the second track from their forthcoming EP, ‘Everything Is Yellow And Yellow Is My Least Favourite Colour’, released via Cross Keys Records. Warmly plied textures in an off-kilter five-and-a-half minute psych-pop refreshment.
MAINLAND - BEGGARS
NYC trio unleash this first single from their forthcoming 'Night Trials' album, due later this year. Following up their 'Outcast' EP - whose title track has received over 1million Spotify streams - this track was inspired by vocalist Jordan Topf's late night subway rides. Toe-tapping number filled with driven bass and brightly confident vocals.
MARK ELLIOTT - DRINK TO THUNK
We featured his 'Dead End Love Affair' back in March (with a 4.5/5 rating) now the Leicester-based artist reveals another track from his upcoming debut EP, ‘China Doll’. "I wrote DTT about that feeling where you're too drunk to string a sentence together but have complete confidence in your ability to dance like MJ. Sounds like a giraffe trying to moonwalk it's way out of a wardrobe.”
SMOKE RINGS - ROSE COLOURED GLASSES
Latest single from the Melbourne-based quintet with smooth 90s vibes, infectious hooks and a trail of hypnotic psychedelic vocals and hazy synth.
LOLA COLT - MOONLIGHT MIXING
From the band's new album 'Twist Through The Fire', out July 1 via Black Tigress Records, this digitally released single cut is a punchy psych-rock-meets-60s-beat-group-pop blast of energy. Gun’s commanding vocal sings the refrain “sugar for my baby” over swirling organ, jangling guitars and driven drums.
COLOR PALETTE - SEVENTEEN
Four-minute-plus lead track from the Washington DC outfit's just released new album 'Vaporwave'. Jay Nemeyer lays a stirring vocal over an alt-rock guitar and drum base.
