New Sounds #65 June 18 2016
EVERING - HAVE NO FEAR
London-based Scottish alt-folk duo, Chris Yendell and Dawn Coulshed, release this new track next week. Acoustic delicacy, balancing Yendell’s emotive vocals against Coulshed’s piano work. Star rating: 3.5/5
LOS ESPINAS - SEAWEED
Cinematic grunge-tinged indie rock via the Sydney quartet's second single from their debut EP 'The Tide' released late last year, out June 20, following 'Shadowboxing'. Star rating: 3.5/5
THE SOAKS - BOYFRIEND
San Diego, California garage rock punks up the power pop hooks on this new single from their 'Hardcore Matinee' album. "The Soaks want to make intense, simple punk music without all the macho/aggressive stuff that sometimes comes with it," says frontman Jordan Clark,
"These songs are straight forward and fun on the surface, yet address very complicated experiences in my life ranging from divorce and depression, to dependency and self medication." Star rating: 3/5
STRANGE RELATIONS - CEREMONIES
Taken from their upcoming EP, 'Going Out', released on July 8 via Tiny Engines, the Minnesota trio deliver a raft of sharp, crystalline guitars, pulsating synths and hazy beats, combined with vocalist/ drummer Casey Sowa’s dreamily atmospheric vocals. Star rating: 3/5
CHARIOTS - LOVE IS THE WEAPON
Oxford-based singer-songwriter/producer Tom Read - aka Chariots - shared this lead track earlier this year, but since the EP which it appears on, 'Chariots', is released on June 21, a good time to refresh memories. Indie-pop that combines enticing melodies with heart-tugging, poignant lyrics. Star rating: 3.5/5
