EP Review :: Hater - Radius
Hater
Radius
July 8 2016 (PNKSLM Recordings)
7/10
Words: Alison Mack
This debut EP from Swedish indie pop act Hater is, at three tracks, a veritably short offering. Perhaps surprisingly too, for those not having heard Hater before and going by the name alone, there might have been an expectation this Malmö band would be firing off heavy metal riffs left, right and centre. In fact, this dreampop quartet couldn't be more opposite, creating reverb shimmers and atmospheric melodics in a hazy cocoon of ambience.
Caroline Landahl lends passionately ethereal vocals to the delicate, washed out melodies of 'First Time', while the title track (and debut single) is resplendent in blissful jangly guitars and soaring vocals. Swimming woozily in between these two is 'Plain Clothes Darling'. The longest track of the bunch at 3:42 minutes it earns its place with catchy, foot-tapping beat that builds over layers of twinkly guitars. An EP of confident, carefree, dreamy pop that is more than worth nine minutes of anyone's time.
