July 8 2016 - Hot Top Ten
TRACK OF THE WEEK
GANGS - THIEVES
Rock & roll Glasgow style from the four-piece who combine elements of garage and punk in this debut release, out on July 22 via Smooth Action Records. Steven Young's caustic vocals carry the song over relentless, guitar riffs and heavy-duty drum work for two and half exhilarating minutes. Catch live for a hometown launch show on July 22 at Broadcast.
BABYGIRL - OVERBORED
First single (released last week) from the upcoming self-produced debut EP 'As You Wish' (out July 29) by Toronto dreampop duo, Kirsten Clark and Cameron Breithaupt. Kirsten’s smooth, yet sullen, vocals opine that, “I’m over you, I’m overbored", as melancholy guitars accompany lo-fi, hypnotic drums.
HIDEOUS SUN DEMON - OSCILLATE
From the upcoming second album, 'Industry Connections' - mixed by King Gizzard's frontman Stu McKenzie - a late follow-up to 2014's 'Sweat', is this scuzzy garage rock stomper from the Perth, Australia stoner punks. The edgy, brutal vocals of singer Vincent Buchanan-Simpson complement grimy guitars and pounding drums.
PICTURE PALACE - NIGHT TRAINS
Following EPs 'Mirage' and 'Kedai', the new single from the High Wycombe, Bucks four-piece - who we introduced here back in November. Released last week, there's an engaging quality to the rhythmic guitar lines that play around an infectious beat and Sam Hunn's vocals.
SUNS - CATALYSE
New self-produced single from the London-based duo, out now via Taiyō Records. Following their 'We Were Kings' EP released last October, they once again meld traditional electronic sounds with alt-pop beats, crafted production and soaring vocals.
NIGHT VERSES - PANIC AND PULL YOUR HEART OUT
We're just stunned. Poetic. Dark. Deep. Intense. Visceral. What more can we say? From the US band's forthcoming second full-length 'Into The Vanishing Light', out today, July 8, via Graphic Nature Records. Vocalist Doug Robinson describes it as, 'a song about breaking through self-pity and finding your inner strength."
KATALINA KICKS - GUNS
Taken from their upcoming EP 'Vices', due October, the London outfit's just released new single packs a grunge-punk essence, working hand in glove with lyrical content relating to America's gun laws, "exacerbated by Donald Trump - and hence his feature in the track."
SOFTER STILL - NEW AGE
Blissful vibes from the new Shepperton, Surrey dreampop quartet with their first single out on Label Fandango today, and which has so far racked up over 30k Soundcloud streams. An Australian sounding vibe to their easy dreamgaze with lush chiming guitars. Catch live tonight at the Old Blue Last in London.
MATTHEW AND ME - JOY
A late follow-up to last year's 'Kitsune', released today through Beatnik Creative - the first track to be taken from their EP due this autumn. An epic seven-and-a-half minute work by Devon-based vocalist Matthew Board and drummer Lucy Fawcett, of exquisite textures and ethereal soundscapes. The song's title is apt.
ASYLUMS - SECOND CLASS SEX
The Southend sex gods turn up the heat with another taste of their debut album ‘Killer Brain Waves‘ before it drops on July 29 via Cool Things Records. Fast-paced and relentless, they hammer two minutes of hardcore guitars and drums and scorching vocals.
