New Sounds #73 July 11 2016
PRIVATE ISLAND - TROUBLE
The Southern California-based sextet share another track from their second EP ‘Sunbreak’, produced, mixed and mastered by Bob Curtain at The Alamo and released on July 8. Smooth retro 70s sounds, the follow-up to recent single 'Drugs'. Star rating: 3/5
GIRL FRIEND - HELLO STRANGER
Produced by Rich Turvey (Blossoms/Clean Cut Kid), the Manchester duo - siblings
Amory and Eleanor Neish-Melling - return with another shot of their sharp, 80s electronic synthpop, released on August 5. Star rating: 3/5
WOJTEK THE BEAR - DEAD FROM THE WAIST UP
Recently released debut single from the Glaswegian (you may guess from the vocals) four-piece) of uplifting indie pop with flowing melodies and big hooks. The single was recorded and produced by Catholic Action's Chris McCrory. Star rating: 3.5/5
THE HALVES - ARE YOU HAPPY?
Released on July 15, one side of the debut single (w/'Gimme The Goods') from Charlotte, North Carolina quartet (the oldest of the four being only 20), comprising of brothers Robbie and Cody Hudgins and friends Ezra Engler and Ian Duke. Recorded on one mic in a local hip-hop studio, there's a raw, DIY exuberance to the three minutes. Star rating: 3.5/5
FEARS CHELLA - COOL
Manchester/Stoke quartet dropped this debut last month of 90s indie grunge sound, coupled with poppy melodies, which here are nicely mixed, while Andy Gannon supplies the vocals over the big hooks and chorus. Star rating: 3.5/5
