New Sounds #75 July 17 2016
BLAJK - LETHAL
We featured the Toronto five-piece BLAJK (pronounced 'black') last December, and they now return with this new single, coming from their imminent EP, 'Limited', out this week. This time around there's a funky R&B/soul element over a heavy bass drum and Jordan Radics’ interwoven smoldering vocals. Star rating: 3.5/5
PINK FLAMES - I'M JUST A STAR ON A DEMOCRATIC FLAG
London duo Isabel Spurgeon (of Novella) and Max Claps (of The Proper Ornaments) cover Los Angeles, 60s stoner band Smiles in this debut single for Raft (Faris and Tarik Badwan's label) Records out on July 22, part of a double A-side, 7″ vinyl. Recorded with The Horrors’ guitarist Joshua Third and The History Of Apple Pie’s Jerome Watson, it's a darkly hypnotic three minutes of moody synths and Spurgeon's companion vocals. Star rating: 3.5/5
PEANESS - I'M NOT YOUR PROBLEM
Released July 30, this is one side of the AA single out via Canadian label Kingfisher Bluez (w/'Fortune Favours The Bold'), from the Chester female alt-indie-pop three-piece, following last summer's debut EP 'No Fun'. Bright, bold and bouncy. Star rating: 3.5/5
ALTA - PLANS
From their upcoming 'Sincere' EP, there's a whole mesmerizing array of textures and sounds from the Melbourne electronic beats duo in this new track, helmed by one of the most gorgeously smoky and sultry vocals to be heard this year from Hannah Lesser. Star rating: 4.5/5
BRUTALIST - STREP
A new collaboration between Melbourne's electronic artist Lucianblomkamp and London-via-Sydney's John Hassell (of Seekae), brings this debut release, out now on Good Manners Records. Created almost entirely through online correspondence between the pair, the arpeggiated synths and bass (not too dissimilar from Burial) merge with glitchy beats in a pulsing soundscape. Star rating: 4/5
