New Sounds #77 July 23 2016
STALGIA - IN THE TREES
Los Angeles electronic duo - Lauren Day and Brandon Leslie - follow-up last year's 'Rust' with this downtempo, melodic number, combining R&B elements with muted trap beats, along with Day’s magnetic vocals. Star rating: 3.5/5
FIELD MOUSE - THE ORDER OF THINGS
Another track from the Brooklyn band's forthcoming third album 'Episodic', which arrives August 5 via Topshelf Records. Guitar-driven sunny pop vibes, with shimmering vocals from Rachel Browne. Star rating: 3.5/5
COLOUR - KEROSENE
The Wirral quartet released their new self-produced four-track EP ‘KAFÉ’ a few weeks ago, and this track exudes their upbeat quality with twinkly synths and zesty guitars. Catch live at Kendal Calling on July 31. Star rating: 3.5/5
TWO PEOPLE - IF WE HAVE TIME
The duo, Phoebe Lou and Joey Clough, formed out of the ashes of Australian outfit Snakadaktal, unveil this second tune, built around a slow-build of melancholic melodies that break out with the introduction of gauzy vocal flourishes, intricate percussion, and airy synths. Star rating: 4.5/5
THE DEADLINE SHAKES - SHELTERS
Glasgow seven-piece share the single cut from their debut album ‘Zealots’, out August 26 on digital via Scottish label Flowers In The Dustbin. An icy lyrical theme of a “nuclear winter”, the alternating childlike sweet/eerie vocals and chorus jumps that jolt it into life every so often make for interest. Catch live today at East Lothian's Audio Soup festival. Star rating: 4/5
