New Sounds #120 November 30 2016
CAIROBI - SAINT
The new single from the London-based band's self-titled debut album, out January 27 2017 via Week of Wonders and Some Other Planet Records. Jangly percussionin a mix of a psychedelic Middle Eastern-inspired soundscapes and afforded an added trippiness by the winding vocals of Giorgio Poti. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
LUNA MAY - STRINGS
23-year-old Melbourne electronic artist Emma Carn follows up 'Castles', with her hypnotic Banks-styled sound of silky, R&B vocals and clipped beats. Now striking out on her own after having spent several years featuring and writing for electronic musicians under an alias. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
GREEN BUZZARD - DO YOU EVER GLOW?
New single, produced and mixed by Burke Reid, released yesterday (November 29) through I OH YOU. Striking synths and Paddy Harrowsmith's vocals mark out the upbeat psych pop rhythms from the Sydney five-piece. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
UNDERACHIEVER - NOISE COMPLAINTS
Formed just in the first half of 2016 (known as The Longnecks up until this month, dropping first track under the name - 'We'll Be Alright' - in April), the four-piece alt-noise punk quartet from Australia's Newcastle in New South Wales share track from their imminent debut EP, 'You Tried Hard'. An infectious raw quality, with
Daniel Foster delivering the dry lyrics in inimitable style. Star rating: ★★★★☆
ROUSSEAU - FAMILIAR
We featured Wellington via Auckland, New Zealand singer/songwriter Clare Rousseau with single 'Sugar Plum' (and the first taste of her forthcoming debut EP, 'hello, i know you’re busy', out in the New Year) earlier in November. Now she turns her ear and insightful lyrics onto a relationship theme built around dark, haunting beats and percussion slot in amidst off-kilter rhythms. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
