New Sounds # No114 November 13 2016

ROSEBUG - I AM THE ONE
Taken from the Brooklyn dreamgaze quartet's debut LP, 'Worst Way', released last week via Dazzleships Records. This bittersweet track of flowing harmonies and distorted guitar chimes is described by lead singer Becca Chodorkoff  as being "unapologetic, a little bit vain. So often, we temper our confidence; convince ourselves that we’re unworthy, or that we’re not nearly as important as we may perceive ourselves to be. I have a propensity to fluctuate between these two opposing poles; of either feeling on top of the world or at the very bottom. This song is written from the high end of that spectrum. It’s about pushing forward, full throttle." Star rating: ★★

FAMILY JOOLS - GET OFF
A little early perhaps as this second single from the new Bristol garage rock outfit is not released until January 6 2017 (through End Of The Trail Records), when no doubt it will then garner more interest through its hazy and mellow retro sound, with an organ winding throughout. Catch live at London's Camden Assembly on November 18 (supporting Coquin Migale) and at Fiddlers Elbow, Camden on November 30. Star rating: ★★

SHY LUV - JOYRIDER
Another new track out last Friday, this from London-based electronic duo (producers Sam Knowles - Karma Kid - and Jake Norman - Armeria). A four-minute electropop meets funk-punk-disco hybrid, set to appear on their second EP 'Shock Horror' out next year. Catch live on November 17 supporting SG Lewis at KOKO in London. Star rating: ★★

WOODES - RISE
Latest from the Melbourne singer/producer’s light pop, downtempo electronica, taken from her self-titled debut EP, which came out last Friday. Co-produced by Woodes with Simon Lam (of Nearly Ontario and Melbourne duo Kllo) as well as roping in an all-star choir for the backing vocals including LANKS, Lupa J, Nirrimi, Golden Vessel and others. Star rating: ★★

HATER - MENTAL HAVEN
New single of washed-out melodies, chiming guitar chords and Caroline Landahl’s affecting vocals from the Swedish four-piece, taken from their debut LP 'You Tried' to be released March 10 2017 via PNKSLM Recordings. Star rating: ★★
