November 25 2016 - Hot Top Ten
TRACK OF THE WEEK
W.H. LUNG - INSPIRATION!
New Manchester psych threesome (formed out of previous band CHAIKA) reveal their hypnotic, post-punk with motorik overtones, with their seven-minute Matt Peel (Eagulls, Autobahn) produced debut single out via their own Hed Glo Inc. label today. Described as “a song that speaks to the ideas of eternity, belonging and meaninglessness.”
HEAT - LUSH
The Montreal band follow debut EP 'Rooms' with this hazy, atmospheric track of shoegazey guitars and vocalist Susil Sharma’s brooding delivery, that is both lush and hot. The first offering from their upcoming debut album 'Overnight' released on January 20 2017 via Topshelf Records.
DUCK - ANGE'S GROOVE
We featured the Sheffield duo earlier in the week with 'Always Meet Me In Dreamzzzz', another track from their just released EP 'sLaCK gOb'. We make no apology for including a second here. There is something coldly clinical about their style - the drum machine and lack of bass partly accountable for this - yet, that is also what makes this, almost six-minute, track so curiously hypnotic. Sarah Griffiths' vocals ring out against a wash of experimental feedback and metallic beats.
NEW CARNIVAL - HOW DARE YOU
Bristol-based four-piece indie rockers return after their Annie Mac (Radio One) tipped debut single ‘Where Do You Wanna Go’, with this sharp, self-produced single of infectious melodies, bouncy tempo and very more-ish vocals. How very dare they!
THE PROPER ORNAMENTS - CREMATED (BLOWN AWAY)
James Hoare (Ultimate Painting, Veronica Falls) and Max Oscarnold (Toy) release their second album 'Foxhole' via Tough Love Records on January 20, 2017. This week they precede it with a sliver of lo-fi psych layered with echoing guitars and harmonies.
IDLE FRETS - GLOW
Released December 9, the new single from the Liverpool/Chester quartet. Layered synths partner a driving rhythm section for a slinky shimmer of a track, that despite the instrumentation, it's Ben Davies's voice that catches the ear. See live next on December 10 at Arts Club Loft, Liverpool.
PATCHWORK GUILT - GET TO REST
Released last Friday, a further 'bedroom tinkering' from Liverpool-based singer-songwriter Phoenix Mundy after her ‘Gold Books’ EP - and the first of a new set of singles to be released with Bristol’s Chiverin (Tamu Massif, Rhain). An intricate mix of electric guitar, percussion, keys, work in harmony Mundy’s scintillating vocals that slowly draw you in over five minutes.
BIRDHOUSE - SWEET
Title track from the Melbourne-based alt-punk rockers' forthcoming EP. Plenty of hooks to match sweet vocal harmonies from Danny Smith and Pat Stanton. “Sweet was written about the darker side of travelling that most people avoid sharing,” lead guitarist Nick Tamiakis says.
THE COURTNEYS - SILVER VELVET
Catchy grunge with a fuzzy edge, with Courtney Loove's dreamy guitar riffs partnering Jen Twynn Payne's sinewy vocal style on this foot-tapper from the Vancouver trio's upcoming album 'II', released February 27 2017 via Flying Nun Records.
HAPPYNESS - FALLING DOWN
First single from the London alt-rockers' (as-yet-untitled) follow-up album to 2014's debut ‘Weird Little Birthday’, set for release next Spring through Moshi Moshi Recordings (UK) / Bar/None (US). A two-minute melancholic intro slowly evolves into three more minutes of chugging pop. Vocalist/guitarist Jon EE Allan describes it as “one of many anti-overthinking songs."
