New Sounds #121 December 3 2016
CITY OVER SAND - CODE RED
From their September released 'Good Grief' full-length, Queensland, Australia collective - helmed by main trio of Brad Hosking, Jules Keshan and Dan Carroll - the latest track of brooding melodies and standout emoting vocals from Carroll. Star rating: ★★☆☆☆
AMETHYSTS - STONES
Second single, released this week (following debut ‘My Love’) from the Suffolk electropop duo. Clarice Parrott’s voice glides dulcetly over washes of synths and hazy guitars, overdriving sub bass and spiky drum machines. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
MUNA - I KNOW A PLACE
Los Angeles synthpop trio follow their RCA signing and 'Loudspeaker' EP, with the first sample of next year's debut album 'About U', released February 3. 80s styled, infectious dancepop anthem, written "for queer folks, for people of color, for immigrants, for those who have been made to feel unsafe in their own skin." Star rating: ★★★☆☆
DEAD NAKED HIPPIES - LIGHTS OUT
Produced by Matt Peel (Eagulls, Pulled Apart By Horses, Autobahn), there's nothing at all 'hippie'-ish about this new Leeds alt-rock-punk threesome (Lucy Jowett - vocals, Joe Clarke - guitar, Jacob Marston - drums) making their debut here with a big raucous blast-off number with boldly unflinching drums, hypnotic guitar and lofty vocals of frontwoman Jowett. Star rating: ★★★★☆
ALLUME - YOU SLEEP CURLED UP
'Slo-fi' electronic minimalism from Adelaide, Australia via the striking voice of Elena Nees (also of duo Hummingbird) that barely rises above the clipped beats. The follow-up to last month's upload track 'Paperbark', both coming from her just released EP, 'Why Move Very Fast At All', out on Melbourne label Healthy Tapes. Star rating: ★★☆☆☆
