New Sounds #125 December 15 2016
VAGUE - CORNER
Berlin/Vienna-based dreampop five-piece follow their full-length 'In The Meantime' released in the spring, with this laid back groove with lo-fi vocals and easy melodies which came out earlier this month. Catch live at Kapu in Linz, Austria on December 17. Star rating: ★★★★☆
THE VELVET HANDS - I DON'T MIND
Released January 20 2017 through Easy Action Records, the Cornwall/ North London based teen four-piece return after first two singles 'Games' and 'Habit' with this catchy belter of punk pop. Star rating: ★★★★☆
ORCHARDS - HONEY
Multi-layered math-pop from the Brighton quartet on this new single. Sweet key vocals are juxtaposed against guitar and synth. The lyrics, they say, are two-fold: "they’re about unrequited love and the chemistry that that situation ignites between two people. On the other hand, you can think about the lyrics in the context of the bee crisis and how those lovely things are currently in danger. Yes, our vocalist is a bit obsessed with bees.” Star rating: ★★★☆☆
ATLANTIC SHORE - SKINNY DIPPING
Title track from the just released EP by the North-West-based (Liverpool/Manchester/Leeds) four-piece (all with roots around Herts/Bucks). Cascades of guitar riffs and Dan Noble's distinctive high vocals work in harmony for a effervescent alt-pop sound. Star rating: ★★★★☆
PLTS - CALL ME OUT
Produced by JP Fung (Last Dinosaurs), the new single (released December 12) from the four-piece indie-rockers, whose name is pronounced as Pilots. Hailing from Byron Bay, Australia, lush vocals and melancholic beach rock rhythms abound. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
