Track Of The Day :: Real Fears - You

Words: Linn Branson

The debut single from synthpop duo Real Fears, 'You', was released last week, and although the moniker may be new, and 'You' a very good first stab, the pair are fairly seasoned artists.

London/Herts-based Dean Canty (lead vocals, guitar, synth, bass) and Adam Sullivan (vocals, guitar, piano and production) were, until the end of last year, known as New Arcades. Employing a similar retro synth sound, it seems that this year they have decided it is time for a new focus.

"We wanted it be memorable yet simple and short," they tell Little Indie in regard to their new name. "It was quite pertinent to the lyrics we were writing at the time, dealing with everyday worries, anxieties and issues that people face. It also, to us at least, makes you think a bit and makes you wonder what the meaning is behind it."

Indeed, and while there's import behind the lyrics, the 80s pop elements of the track, and its cross-influences from likes of Bleachers and Purity Ring to The Police and Cure, along with the vocals of Canty and its catchy, easy to like beat and melodies, keep it fresh for 2017.

Stay tuned for an EP and live shows later in the year, though before that they will be releasing a video to accompany 'You': "We are actually doing a stripped back live recording this weekend, and we'll cut the video ready for next week."
