Returning home to Leeds at the end of their current tour, it was assured that its local noise punk boys Chest Pains would be given a hearty welcome. With a strong bill of five bands, and the event itself being free ensured a large and diverse crowd in attendance.
As always in the Games Room of the Brudenell, the sound quality is immense, and when Chest Pains took to its stage they greeted their home crowd with a set of sweaty intensity and loud, punky guitars.
A young band with a developing sound, they ride through on abundant hooks and the fuzz-cloaked vocals of Sam Robinson, with a lyrical style, as to get heard on latest of two new singles, ‘Shame’, that abounds on racing choruses and a hard-hitting DIY impact.
‘Struggling’ is an anxious, writhing mess of garage punk as Robinson wrestles with the microphone. My personal favourite of the two singles (although both are very good), the snarly ‘Petrified’ - written about a long-distance relationship - brings the show to an electric end, especially thanks to its varying tempo throughout, allowing it to explode just when you think it’s going to stop.
A band showing a lot of promise and who clearly have the musical skills to go hand in hand with an enthralling live show. The music scene in Leeds is alive and well at the moment thanks to bands like Chest Pains keeping it diverse and interesting
